Making It Music Sex Drugs in the Golden Age of Rock eBook Ted Myers
A raw and honest narrative of what it was like to be involved in the music scene (on both coasts) during the 60's and 70's. Ted Myers was "this close" to fame countless times, and very close to many of the singers, musicians and music business icons that you all know. I admit to being a friend of Ted Myers, and must admit that there was one section of the book that came "too close to home" for me to give it 5 stars. If you want to read about what the 60's and 70's were like from the personal point of view of a musical and social participant in the "Golden Age of Rock", get this book. It's not for the faint of heart, but I can attest to its honesty. Good job,my friend.

Making It Music Sex Drugs in the Golden Age of Rock eBook Ted Myers Reviews
Although a product of the 50's, I was just a bit too young to live much of the early 60"s What a great time to live. So much to learn from this era. I am going to go back and purchase another copy for my friend who was very much a part of that era. Would love for someone from this generation to read this book and then ask them for feedback.
CHRONICLED A LIFE DURING EXCITING TIME.
A detailed walk through a time of exploading lifestyles, mind altering drugs and music that captured your imagination. GREAT READ.
Being a fan of '60s rock, I was hypnotized by Ted Myers' biography and couldn't put it down.
In this book, Ted presents never-ending humorous (and wonderfully naive) anecdotes from his formative years growing up in Greenwich Village while under the spell of the rampant jazz, rock, and folk music scenes. This era is followed by a brief tenure at Goddard College in the remote rural hills of Vermont that spurred on a music project with like-minded individuals, which ultimately led to the formation of the Lost in urban and countercultural Boston. HIs subsequent bands included Chameleon Church (with drummer/comedian Chevy Chase), plus playing in the swan song year of the legendary Bosstown sound combo Ultimate Spinach.
Ted's cross-country move to La La Land during the early '70s was punctuated by many brushes with fame and fortune ... but ultimately finding neither except for a container boat-load of wild and crazy tales which finally let to a secure career as an A&R director at the esteemed and hip Rhino Records.
By fate, the previous book that I read was Graham Nash "Wild Tales" (also highly recommended). Ted's autobiography includes on the cover the apropos quote "It's such a delight..." by Graham himself, who makes a couple of guest appearances in "Making It."
For anyone who wants to experience first-hand the dayglow '60s in full bloom ... or read about an exceptionally talented and gifted musical foot soldier looking to make it in the big leagues but never quite getting his shoe in the door, this is the book for you.
FYI I'd also recommend checking out music by the Lost, archived on The Lost "Lost Tapes" (Arf Arf AA-081) which is also available on .
I wanted some insight into early Boston Rock and I got that. The book is upfront on what it is about...it's 1/3 rock, 1/3 sex and 1/3 drugs. I cared most about Ted's time in The Lost, Chameleon Church and the Ultimate Spinach (third LP). I got the details I wanted there. Ted has a pretty good memory.
No one else has told the story from the inside like Ted has. At this moment this is the only place to get some of how it really was.
As his life goes on you get the LA part of his career that descends into drug use and dealing. With that came copious sex-capades.
At 40 he straightens out and turns things around with a job at Rhino.
He tells the tale better than most and it's more interesting than most.
It's plain story telling with no literary pretentions.
Ted's book is a pretty accurate portrayal of what so many of us aspiring rock stars experienced in the sixties and seventies. Most of us got enough rejection notices to fill a book. But then when you look at the lives of Janis Joplin, Amy Winehouse and others, you realize maybe "making it" is not all what it's cracked up to be. 90% of us never "made it" in the commercial sense. But some of us have played on big stages with great musicians, and we had a lot of fun. Sometimes that "fun" came back to bite us, but I wouldn't have traded it for anything. I just would have stayed away from the drugs. Other than that, I was happy to have great friends, great family, and play some music with great musicians. It's all good. So, if you like a book that tells it like it is for most musicians... this book is for you.
