The Invention of Nature by Andrea Wulf is a biography of Alexander von Humboldt, a Prussian naturalist born in 1769. Humboldt had an older brother, Wilhelm. Their father died when they were young, and their mother was emotionally detached from her sons. Alexander and Wilhelm received exacting educations. Alexander became interested in exploration and science, but his mother pressured him to become a civil servant, so he attended a mining academy to become a mine inspector while conducting his own botanical research. He invented new tools for miners, published books on subterranean plants and rocks, and experimented with the effect of electricity on the nervous system.
Wilhelm introduced Alexander von Humboldt to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the renowned author, and they formed a close friendship based on a mutual interest in the intersection of science and art. Humboldt gained an appreciation for aesthetic perspective from Goethe, and Goethe received the latest in scientific information from Humboldt....

Summary Analysis of The Invention of Nature Alexander von Humboldt New World by Andrea Wulf (Audible Audio Edition) Instaread Michael Pauley Books Reviews
Fine
This is an overview of the actual book “The Invention of Nature“ ... Kind of like an abbreviated Cliff's Notes for the full book. It provides a potential reader enough information regarding this book’s content to determine if we want to invest the extra money and time to actually buy and read the entire book. Most people would never guess from the title that this is the biography of an 18th Century Prussian scientist/naturalist. This is a good example of why, as an avid reader, I have personally found “Instaread” to be a very helpful and valuable service.
Its ok but as the discussion leader I did not get much from the summary
The Invention of Nature by Andrea Wulf is a biography of Alexander von Humboldt, a Prussian naturalist born in 1769. With his father dead when he was an infant, and pressured into the civil service by an emotionally detached mother, Humboldt lacked many social graces, but he was a man far ahead of his time. Even while in the civil service, he continued to study nature and the complexity of natural relationships, inspiring such people as Goethe, Darwin, and Thoreau with his wide-ranging studies and writing. An anti-slavery, anti-imperialist, Humboldt was also one of the first people to call for preserving the natural environment. He went against many of the social and political currents of his time, and until a rise in anti-German, anti-Prussian sentiments during the WWI and WWII periods was well known in scientific circles.
Wulf’s biography is very well summarized in Summary & Analysis of The Invention of Nature Alexander von Humboldt’s New World by Andrea Wulf by Instaread. The Instaread book details the main themes of Wulf’s book, with a discussion of the relationships and the historical and cultural environment of Humboldt’s time and how his work affected those who followed him. An excellent introduction to a book that sounds worth reading.
I read Andrea Wulf’s in depth analysis about one if the most important and most forgotten figures in science. As a retired science teacher if 36 years I have recommended her book to every science teacher I encounter. After purchasing and reading this summary I feel insulted and manipulated into buying something that is less informative than book reviews I have read on line. A complete waste of money and time. I hope Ms Wulf has nothing to do with this effort.
