The book is written in a slightly understated Hawaiian first person narrative dialect which may come across as a little crude at first, but you get a great feel for the character and the locale - tropical paradise Hawaii. The thriller unfolds with interesting twists and a very believable story line. Reminded me a lot of Magnum PI, except with a local Hawaian ex military as the protagonist, and a deeper, more involved and provocative story.

Mike Bond has written a "wake-up call" book for not only Hawaii, but other States which are allowing bogus corporate deals to be made, masquerading as Environmentally friendly plans. The tale of crooked politicians, media-for hire and a rush to judgment over murder and mayhem is one that will make you think and get your blood boiling. Using Hawaiian language patterns, Bond captures a side of the Islands that tourists never see. I found myself floundering a little in the story line as there were so many moving parts, but it was a good guessing game as to WHODUNIT. Really interesting.
Writing as an insider made the reader one. The plot twisted and turned. You were right with Pono trying to stay an of the bad guys and trying to figure it all out Bond gave you an ending that tied every knot and made you feel good. Found a new favorite author.
Aware that this is a novel, I assume due diligence was used in much of the background info research. Going from there, I feel great sadness for the indigenous people of the islands. And even as I enjoyed the adventure and character I have this terrible awareness of the reality of where our country is and how quickly it is worsening. The speech patterns made me feel as though I was in the middle of the action. Really enjoyed this.
A fervent plea for leaving Paradise alone, this novel posits a triangular conspiracy among energy purveyors and politics. No huge surprise there. The plot seems to be a frame from which the author hangs his various horror stories about almost every type of energy...wind, extractive or other...and how these industries are either useless or fake. He makes a solid case about the wind industry in particular lots of taxpayer money going into spectacularly expensive pieces of equipment which produce little to nothing in the way of power, but bring huge returns to the investors. And, of course, ruin the landscape, kill birds and drive people from their piece of Paradise.

The hero (ostensibly he's trying to solve a murder or two) who, along with making these observations regarding the corruption of those in power, also seems to have superhuman strength, endurance and sexual prowess, is unbelievable on many levels. If you're looking for an overview of Hawai'i and what's happening there, this is a swiftly read "beach book."
I enjoyed this book a little better than the last book I read by this author 'The last Savanna'. The read is a good one reference Hawaii. Having visited the islands of Oahu and Maui, it brought back glowing reminders of the beautiful land and sea and the Hawaiians themselves. Almost as descriptive as the book "Hawaii" itself by James Michener. It has you caught up in the fight to save the land and the animals that inhabit it. It also gave an excellent look into the greedy, crooked and narrow minded, supposed elected representatives of the people. Pretty current in today's climate of political corruption, shady corporations, and all looking to get the most money they can no matter who they have to step on to acquire it. It is a very compelling read and hard to put down. But the annoying habit of purposefully omitting the preposition 'to' nearly turned me against reading further. And it got worse towards the end. Otherwise I could have given it a 4 star.
This is a great story but the main Character Pono the author made him sound like a meat head towards the end of the book. The way the characters was talking it became irritating to me. I loved all the twist and turns in the story it makes you want to turn the pages. Pono seemed to be a strong loving man who served his country who understood the political function of Big Wind and it's impact on the environment especially in a place like Hawaii. I wish the author would of stayed strong with the main character Pono life and situation started off strong his desire to solve the reporters murder and his ability to evade getting caught by using his special forces military training. I appreciate the story to get me to think about the actual cost of good sound environmental policy and the more this story went on the more I realized the big wind is not the answer for a green economy. When policy moves away from individuals doing the right thing to corporations only doing it for the huge wind fall of subsidies in the form of tax dollars there is a serious problem with the policy. Thank you for making me realize our policy on this issue is broken.
The book was a very interesting read. You start out expecting a novel but you also find a lot of socio-political comment and historic overlays, which initially seem quite strange, but as you become absorbed in the book, in helps you to understand the main character and the sub texts the book is looking to highlight as part of the plot. The prose also initially you find strange, as you are expecting a perfectly edited and grammatically correct book, but then you realise it was sritten with a view to how the character would speak. What it does do is make you think, understand and grow with the novel and the story. An absorbing and interesting read and I hope to find more of the same from the Authors other books.
